Shenandoah: The origins
of the song is mysterious. Two verses of the song were published in an article
by W. J. Alden in Harper's Magazine (1882). Shenandoah was an Indian chief
living on the Missouri River.

Researchers & Contributors
I wish to thank the following genealogists, researchers and distant cousins for there collaboration and valued contributions to this web site.
I
wish to especially thank my distant cousin, Robert Edgar Howell of
Missouri. Without him this website would not exist today. When I first started
researching the Howell family in the mid 1990s, all I had to go on was that my
grandfather, Samuel Brady Howell, was born in Hawk Point, Lincoln Country,
Missouri, at the beginning of the Civil War in 1861. With no genealogy
experience, I was pretty wet behind the ears and did not have a clue on how or
where to begin. However, I was determined to find out who and where our
ancestors came from. Thus, I used a shotgun approach and sent letters to a
number of places in Lincoln County, Missouri. I got a reply from the Lincoln
County Historical Society. They pointed me in the direction of Robert. Robert
became my genealogy "mentor". As they say, the rest is
"history".
I wish to also thank and remember Robert's sister, Anna Lois HOWELL Palmer (1933-2002). May she rest in peace.
Robert Edgar Howell

Extended Family
The origins of the Brown family: Charlotta
Brown (1801-1880) who married Robert Howell (1804-1864). Their son
was James Madison Howell (1833-1914), father of Samuel Brady Howell (1861-1951).
Charlotta was the daughter of Wiley Brown (1769-March 1848) and Margaret
(Peggy) Jent. Wiley Brown was the son of William Brown, Jr. who died in
North Carolina about 1799. He was a Revolutionary War veteran. Wiley Brown, his
older brother, Drury Brown, and a sister who married a Watson left North
Carolina soon after their father died and came to Allen County, Kentucky.
The Watsons died young and their daughter was raised by Wiley Brown. Wiley and
Drury Brown were large landowners in Allen County. Wiley settled on Long Creek
and is believed to be buried at the Old Salem Church in Allen County. After
William Brown, Jr. died, one of his sons, Charles W. Brown, stated the following
in a sworn statement, filed in Henderson County, KY, swore that "my late
father, Wm Brown deceased, a soldier in the North Carolina line in the War of
the Revolution, sworn, and subscribed before the Honorable, the County Court of
Henderson County, KY, this 27th Day of 8th Mo. 1832. - Charles W. Brown."
The affidavit continued saying "that William Brown, my late father did
enlist in the war - say 1775 or 6, for the term of 'during the war', and served
on the regiment No (not recollected) under the command of Colonel (not
recollected) of the North Carolina Line; and that he continued in the service
aforesaid until the close of the war". Source: National Archives &
Records / Order for Photocopies Concerning Veteran dated 5/11/1968. Receipt #:
54511. The Brown family was in Virginia in the 1600s and in North Carolina by
1755.

A very special thanks goes out to Leo Little lwlittle@yahoo.com & Janice Craft tombstone@tecinfo.com who provided me with the following information on the HOWELL and LITTLE records of Franklin County, GA and Barren County, KY.
Note: Allen County was not established until the year 1815. It was formed from portions of Warren and Barren Counties. Thus, the 1810 Census of Barren County includes landowners that would eventually become part of Allen County 5 years later
Samuel HOWELL, Raleigh HOWELL, William HOWELL and William LITTLE resided in the same time frame and the same area of Franklin County, Georgia. They all migrated to Allen County (formed from Barren County in 1815) County Kentucky about the same time and became neighbors.
See for more details see the Georgia and Kentucky pages in the HISTORY chapter.

HOWELL / PERDUE / BRYANT Family
Two children of William Hale PERDUE and Sarah Sally (HOWELL) PERDUE, Mary Francis PERDUE and Martha Ann PERDUE, married the twin son's of Allen and Sarah (SNIDER) BRYANT, Charles and Daniel C. BRYANT. Daniel C. and Martha Ann (Perdue) BRYANT settled in the Springvale, Pratt County, Kansas area in about 1884 which was about the same time Samuel Brady Howell was on a timber claim between Cullison and Springvale. The photos of the Bryants [Photo] [Photo] are courtesy of Betty Bryant Barker, Phoenix, AZ.
William and Celia Howell may have died between 1850 and 1860 as some of their children appear in other households and their children appear as heirs to Sion Cook who died in March of 1858. Sion Cook died in March 1858. Land was inherited by the heirs and sold to Sions oldest son, Calvin Cook. Heirs-at-law included in a deed dated October, 1858 include the following: Sarah Howell, Winnifred Howell, James Howell, Robert Howell, Barbara Howell, and Winston Howell. These are quite possibly the children of William and Celia Howell. If Celia was Sion Cooks daughter, then she and William may have died before the deed was made as she is not included in the signatures. Winnifred Jent was Sions wife wife's name, and a son of Sion named a daughter Celia. Sions brother, Jacob Cook, married a Barbary Jent. Sion Cook was a neighbor of Raleigh Howell. "March 1834 - The court ordered Sion Cook, Matthew Johnson, Henry Brown & Jacob Beheler to appraise and inventory the estate of Raleigh Howell." Source: Allen Co., KY Day Book 1826-1837. Robert Witt is researching the COOK & FOLLIS family lines."Let me first say that when I first saw your Howell Family web site, I was very delighted. This was on the Lincoln Co. Gen Web Page. I am picking up where my parents have left off on my family heritage. Their research is a 25 year collection. In their collection they have received very little on my Howell and Wade lines. I have worked a couple of years on my other lines, and just recently decided to tackle my lines from Lincoln Co MO. My parents did travel to Lincoln Co courthouse years ago and more or less come up empty handed. In finding your web page there I did find ancestral lines with your family. My grandmother, Beatrice Howell, is a daughter of William H Howell, who was married to America [last name unknown]. We also did not know of a second marriage to an Alice Keithly. My parents do have a copy of Beatrice Howell and George Otis Wades marriage license. But, as I am thinking in my notes it shows Beatrice as a daughter of William and America. Beatrice is born in 1879, Lincoln Co MO. We do show him(William H) being born in 1843, Lincoln Co also....I noticed that on Beatrice and George Otis's marriage license that George was from Moscow Mills, Lincoln Co. and that Beatrice Howell was from Eolia, which is in Pike Co, or at the time of their marriage. They were married in the brides home, in Pike Co."
"I am very impressed with your web-page. Just wondering
what has happened too my America. She is, and with William H Howell, how I could
find my connection here. Keep up the good work!!! And will be returning to
your page often. Thanks in advance to any clues or answers you may give me." Kelly
Meyer, MO.

HOWELL / PERDUE / RECORD Family
"I looked through my family book and found the information about the Howell's that descend from James Madison Howell and Sina Adaline Perdue, at least the descendents I know of. James and Sina had a son, Silas Howell, born 18 Aug. 1875 in Troy, Missouri. I am not sure if James and Sina had any more children as I have not been able to research them yet. Silas married Bertha Record (b. 20 Apr 1884), the daughter of William Record and Matilda Pearce. Silas and Bertha had two sons, Lylburne and Roland. Silas passed away on 19 April, 1943, in Hutchinson, Kansas. He was buried at Memorial Park Cemetery in Hutchinson, Kansas. Bertha passed away on 9 Sept. 1943 in Hutchinson, Kansas, and she is also buried at Memorial Park Cemetery in Hutchinson, Kansas. Lylburne Howell, my great-grandfather, was born 14 Oct. 1903 in Renfrow, Oklahoma. He married Wanda Might in 1922 at Hutchinson, Kansas. Wanda was the daughter of Hollis Might and Elizabeth Weppler. Lylburne and Wanda had one daughter, whose name was Jeanette Wanda Howell but who always went by the name "Donette." Lylburne and Wanda divorced when Donette was about eight years old. Lylburne remarried Helene, (I don't know her last name), but they didn't have any children. Lylburne passed away 25 Nov 1990." Krissi Egeland, MN

"If you know of anyone in the William Henry Howell and Laura E. Wilson Howell family line that is interested in knowing more about Laura's Kentucky family, they can contact me. My grandmother was Mary Helen Wilson Foster, Laura E. Wilson Howell's sister. I have information on Laura's family - the Joseph A. Wilson and Barbara Ann Miller Wilson family - and have family pictures of that I would be glad to share." Barbara Foster Warren, Nashville, TN

ROLAND / WELTY (HOWELL) / EAST / JOHNSON / POTTER
I took the position of Archivist for Calaveras
County for about 10 months in 2002 - 2003 following the death of a good friend
who had held that position for 25 years. That combined with being
President of the Calaveras Genealogical Society, selling our home and moving in
July 2003 and doing some long awaited traveling left little time for researching
my family histories. Sandy and I are both retired. I resigned my position as
Archivist and President of the Society, but assumed the position of Treasurer
for the Society and we both are Board members. But, this move has freed up our
time so we can travel while we still can.
Fortunately I have a fair collection of JOHNSON family pictures and some
letters. I have also met other JOHNSON cousins these past 2
and 3 years have who has shared some additional old family photos and info among
which was one or more photos of Moses BOND, father of Elizabeth BOND who is my
2nd great grandfather, James Thomas JOHNSON'S, 1st wife and 1st cousin to his
2nd wife (Who is my 2nd great grandmother), Sarah Ann EAST. Elizabeth's and
Sarah's mothers were sisters: Sophia "Zillah" (Zilla) (Zella) WELTY
BOND & Frances Mary "Fanny" WELTY EAST respectively. These photos
also include pics of Moses' daughter, Donna M. BOND, by his third marriage to
Zillah (Unknown) POWELL; Donna's husband, Robert C. BROWN, and their son, Elma
"Elmer" B. BROWN. Regretfully, as is typical of most photos, many of
them are unidentified. However, I did put them on a CD and sent a copy to the
Lincoln County, MO Genealogical Society in hopes Audrey KINION, Grace HEMPLE or
others might be able to identify some of them. They in turn shared the pics with
Will BACON, who was able to identify those of Moses BOND. The cousin who shared
these photos with me is able to identify the more current photos which includes
those of her gg grandmother, Martha Ann "Aunt Patsy" JOHNSON forward.
I will send a revised CD to the Lincoln County Genealogical Society as soon as
Lorna, myself and others identify what they can of these photos.
